Bubble placement rules that actually help
Reading order matters more than exact position: place bubbles left to right, top to bottom, in the order they should be read, so nobody has to guess which line comes first.
Tails point to mouths, not faces or chests. A thought bubble does not need a tail at all, small trailing shapes or none work fine.
Never cover a face with a bubble. If a panel is tight, shrink the bubble or move it to open space in the background rather than placing it over the one thing readers are looking at.
Which bubble type to use
Speech is for anything said out loud. Thought is for internal monologue. Shout is for yelling, alarm, or a sudden loud sound, keep the text short. Caption is for narration that is not coming from any character, like "Three days later." Whisper is for anything quiet or secretive.
