How to make a speech bubble

  1. 1

    Pick the bubble type

Speech for anything said out loud, thought for inner monologue, shout for yelling, whisper for quiet lines, caption for narration.

  2. 2

    Type the text

Keep it short. The bubble grows to fit your words and wraps the lines the same way bubbles do in a koma.ink comic.

  3. 3

    Point the tail

Choose one of eight directions so the tail points at the speaker. Captions have no tail.

  4. 4

    Set the size and download

Slide the font size, then download a transparent PNG you can drop onto any image in Canva, Procreate, Photoshop, Google Slides or Word. Or download a printable sheet of blank bubbles as a PDF or PNG.

The five comic bubble types

A speech bubble is a rounded balloon with a tail pointing at the speaker. A thought bubble is a cloud-like shape with small trailing circles instead of a tail. A shout bubble is bold, in capitals, for yelling and sudden noise. A whisper bubble uses a dashed outline and lighter text so it reads as quiet. A caption is a rectangular box, not attached to anyone, for narration like "Three days later."

How to put a speech bubble on a picture

The PNG you download has a transparent background, so it sits on top of any picture without a white box around it. Place the file as a layer in Canva, Procreate, Photoshop, Google Slides, PowerPoint or Word, then move and resize it. Keep the tail pointing at the mouth of the speaker, and keep bubbles out of the characters' faces.

If your picture is already on your computer and you want to drag bubbles straight onto it, use the comic bubble generator instead. It overlays bubbles on a photo or drawing and exports the combined image.

A printable sheet of blank speech bubbles

The sheet holds eight empty bubbles: speech with the tail at different corners, two thought bubbles, a shout, a whisper and a caption. Print it on A4 or Letter, cut the bubbles out and glue them on a hand-drawn page, or trace them with a pen. It is a quick way to plan lettering before you draw the panel.

When AI should do the lettering

If you would rather skip the lettering entirely, koma.ink writes the script, draws every panel and places the speech bubbles for you. Signing up gives you 30 free credits, no card. The bubbles you make here use the same lettering rules, so they match.

FAQ

How do I make a speech bubble?

Type your text, pick speech, thought, shout, whisper or caption, choose which way the tail points, and press download. You get a transparent PNG you can place on any image.

Is the speech bubble maker free?

Yes. It is free, needs no account and has no watermark. Everything happens in your browser and nothing you type is uploaded.

Is the PNG really transparent?

Yes. Only the bubble and its text are drawn, the rest of the image is transparent, so you can layer it over a photo or a drawing.

Can I print blank speech bubbles?

Yes. Choose A4 or Letter and download the sheet of eight blank bubbles as a PDF or PNG. Print it, cut them out or trace them.

What is the difference between a speech bubble and a thought bubble?

A speech bubble is a smooth balloon with a pointed tail and means the character said it aloud. A thought bubble is a cloud shape with a trail of small circles and means the character is thinking it.

Can I add bubbles to my own photo?

Download the transparent PNG and place it as a layer in any editor, or use the comic bubble generator, which lets you drag bubbles directly onto an image you load from your device.

Can AI add the speech bubbles for me?

Yes. In koma.ink you write a one-line idea and AI writes the script, draws each panel and places the bubbles. Use the idea box on this page.
